Carson F. Dye, FACHE, President & CEO of Exceptional Leadership, LLC, is a seasoned leadership consultant with over 40 years of leadership and management experience.

Dye combines over 20 years of executive search and consulting with 20 years of executive leadership positions in four hospitals/health systems. Moreover, he has taught many individuals over the past 30 plus years through his relationships with the American College of Healthcare Executives, The Governance Institute, University of Alabama-Birmingham, and The Ohio State University.

His executive search, consulting, and counsel is based upon:

(a) a firm grounding in the principles of leadership and the assessment of leaders

Along with his executive search work, teaching, and writing, he has had considerable experience the past two decades in physician leadership and physician engagement.

For the past 20 years, Carson has conducted over 700 leadership searches for a variety of health care organizations. These have included CEO, COO, CFO, and physician executive roles in health systems, academic medical centers, universities, and free standing hospitals. 

Carson also has extensive experience in executive search and leadership consulting including succession, coaching, executive leadership assessment, physician leadership development, and retreat facilitation. He is certified to use the Hogan Leadership Assessment tests in assessing senior leadership talent and executive team building. He has had extensive experience working with physician leaders and has customized physician leadership academies for several health systems. 

Carson has served as an executive search consultant and partner with 3 large search firms including Witt/Kieffer, TMP Worldwide, and LAI/Lamalie Associates. Earlier in his career, Carson also was partner and director of Findley Davies, Inc.’s healthcare consulting division in Toledo. He has had twenty years experience in healthcare administration, having served in executive roles at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center, Toledo, The Ohio State University Medical Center, Columbus, Children’s Hospital Medical Center, and Clermont Mercy Hospital, both in Cincinnati. 

Carson has been a regular faculty member for the American College of Healthcare Executives since 1987 and teaches in the Board of Governors Exam Prep course. He currently holds a faculty appointment at the University of Alabama-Birmingham in their Executive Master of Science in Health Administration program and also serves as a faculty member of The Governance Institute. For twenty years he also taught organizational behavior and leadership at The Ohio State University's MSHA program.

He has authored eleven books including three ACHE Book of the Year winners, The Healthcare Leader's Guide to Actions, Awareness, and Perception, 3rd ed. (2016) Developing Physician Leaders for Successful Clinical Integration (2013) and Leadership Values (2001). He has also authored Leadership in Healthcare: Essential Values & Skills, 4th Edition (2023); Enhanced Physician Engagement, Volume 1: What It Is, Why You Need It, and Where to Begin (2021); Enhanced Physician Engagement, Volume 2: Tools and Tactics for Success (2021); Exceptional Leadership – 16 Critical Competencies, 2nd Edition (2015); Winning the Talent War (2001); and Protocols for Healthcare Executive Behavior (1993). The Dye-Garman Leadership Competency Model from the Exceptional Leadership book is used by many leading health care organizations for assessment and leadership development.

Carson earned his M.B.A. at Xavier University, Cincinnati, OH and his B.A. at Marietta College, Marietta, OH. He has served on the boards of Lourdes University, The Sight Center (Toledo Society for the Blind) where he served as board chair, and the Visiting Nurses Association.
