Scott Ransom is Partner in the Health & Life Sciences Advisory at Oliver Wyman. He serves as a consultant to hospitals, health systems, academic medical centers, physician groups, insurance companies, private equity firms, and universities on issues related to strategy-enabled transformation, organizational effectiveness and redesign, social determinants of health, partnership and growth strategy, leading physician integration and engagement, restructuring and turnaround management, medical education, clinical and research operations, and mergers and acquisitions.
Formerly a partner with PricewaterhouseCoopers, Scott has always focused on healthcare provider business around strategy-enabled transformations leveraging deep experience across key industry stakeholders including insurance companies, academic medical centers, universities, physician groups, private equity firms, and other leading organizations in areas related to strategy-enabled transformation.
Scott has over 30 years of consulting, operations and leadership experience, including serving as Managing Director and Leader of the Strategy and AMC practices at Navigant Consulting and Senior Expert and Leader of the Southern Region of the Healthcare practice and AMC practice at McKinsey and Company. In addition, Scott previously served as President and CEO of an academic health science center including medical, public health, and pharmacy schools.
Experience:
Strategy: Conducted multiple growth strategy and merger studies to support expanded volumes and scale, improved operations, and transformations at health systems, children’s hospitals, medical schools, and physician groups.
Operations: Advised organizations to transform areas related to clinical, research and education operations; physician/faculty productivity and alignment; compensation; academic affiliations; and mergers and acquisitions.
Organizational Turnarounds/Restructuring: conducted several multi-lever cost diagnostic, organizational redesign, and implementation efforts leading to dramatic cost savings and greater efficiency at hospitals and medical schools.
Previous experience:
Scott has over 20 years of leadership, operations and clinical experience, including: President and CEO of an academic health science center; Senior Vice President/Chief Quality Officer of an eight hospital healthcare system; and hospital Vice President for Medical Affairs.
He served as a tenured Professor in Obstetrics, Gynecology, Health Management and Policy at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He has been a National Institutes of Health (NIH) and National Science Foundation (NSF) funded researcher with over 100 publications, including ten books, on topics related to physician performance, healthcare management, and quality of care. He has delivered over 4000 babies as a practicing obstetrician.
Throughout his career, he has been affiliated with several institutions including: University of Michigan Health System in Ann Arbor, Wayne State University School of Medicine, Detroit Medical Center, Department of Veterans Affairs, University of North Texas Health Science Center, Massachusetts General Hospital, and Harvard University.
Dr. Ransom is a Distinguished Fellow and a past President of the American College of Physician Executives (FACPE). He is a Fellow in several professional organizations including the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (FACOG), American College of Surgeons (FACS), and American College of Healthcare Executives (FACHE). He is board certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, American Board of Medical Management, and Certifying Commission in Medical Management.
Scott holds a MPH in clinical effectiveness from Harvard University School of Public Health, a MBA from University of Michigan Ross School of Business, and graduated from medical school at Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences. He earned an undergraduate degree in chemistry from Pacific Lutheran University and is a graduate of the United States Marine Corps Officer Candidate School.
