John Byrnes, MD is the author of two significant books, "The Safety Playbook: A Healthcare Leader’s Guide to Building a High-Reliability Organization (2017), and The Quality Playbook® (2015), founder of Quality BootCamp and HRO Academy, and serves as the President & CEO of the Byrnes Group, a healthcare consulting and training firm.

Widely recognized for his quality and patient safety expertise, Dr. Byrnes has designed award winning programs for organizations throughout the United States and Europe. He provides training and consultations for health systems, hospitals, and medical groups on clinical quality, patient safety, high reliability design, outcome measurement, and physician engagement. During his recent 10+ year tenure as Chief Quality Officer at Spectrum Health, the organization received over 100 quality awards, was ranked three times as one of the nation’s Top 15 health systems, and received multiple Top 100 and Top 50 hospital designations.

Dr. Byrnes is on the national faculty for the American Association for Physician Leaders (AAPL) and their Board’s Faculty Advisory Council. In addition to founding Quality BootCamp® and HRO Academy, he has taught many programs for AAPL, the American College of Healthcare Executives, and the Healthcare Financial Management Association. He has also served as a guest lecturer at the Haas School of Business and the School of Public Health of UC Berkeley, the University of Michigan Ross School of Business, the University of Michigan School of Public Health, the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, Baylor College of Medicine, MIT Sloan School of Management, and Emory University School of Medicine among others.

He has authored more than 30 articles in major journals and contributed to eight books. The Quality Playbook, was released in November, 2015 and The HRO Playbook has been accepted for publication by Health Administration. Dr. Byrnes is a member of the National Board of Directors for the Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA) and has served on Board Quality Committees for large hospital systems, multi-specialty medical groups, integrated healthcare systems, and health plans. He also serves as Clinical Associate Professor at Michigan State University, College of Human Medicine.

He received his medical degree from the University of Missouri – Kansas City. He completed an internship in internal medicine and residency in anesthesiology at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center in Houston, The Texas Heart Institute, MD Anderson Cancer Center, Texas Children’s Hospital, and Memorial Hermann Health System.
